High Speed
Treadmill
The high-speed treadmill is used for rehabilitation and for clinical exercise testing. It is a Sato treadmill, with a top speed of 16 metres per second (equivalent to 35 mph) and a variable incline of 0-10%.
This treadmill is mainly used for conducting treadmill endoscopy. Horses are admitted to Hartpury Equine Therapy a couple of days prior to their endoscopy in order to be trained to run on the treadmill at speeds of up to 12 metres per second.
Video endoscopy is carried out by Tim Galer who takes referrals from many practices in the surrounding area.
The high-speed treadmill is also useful as a form of controlled exercise for the rehabilitation of tendon and ligament injuries, as well as providing a means of carrying out work on a gradient. It is invaluable in the exercise programmes of those horses requiring increased hindquarter muscle strength.
