Stud
The Stud
Moving from Laughtons Farm in 2001, the stud now enjoys purpose built facilities at Home Farm. The stud comprises of 22.31 hectares divided into paddocks for grazing stallions, youngstock, visiting and barren mares as well as pasture reserved for mares and foals.
Aim
The primary aim of Home Farm Stud is to provide our Hartpury students with an insight into how a commercial, modern Sport Horse stud successfully operates. Students gain theoretical knowledge from experienced members of the stud team and valuable hands-on practical experience.
Our commercial goal is to produce high quality British Sport Horses and to provide our services to mare and stallion owners to the highest level of quality.
In addition to education, producing youngstock and accepting visiting mares, the stud is utilised for research both by Hartpury students and externally run projects.
Facilities
Housing at Home Farm Stud is provided by large stables for the stallions and mares and barn space for the young horses. We have foaling boxes with CCTV and foaling alarms with the addition of 24 hour care provided by qualified, experienced staff living on site. There is also a semen laboratory, a collection area with phantom mare and stocks, to allow professional undertaking of the stud work. The stud has an outdoor arena and a walker for training and exercising the horses.
Services
The stud is a DEFRA approved collection and insemination centre and stallions are available via AI; fresh, chilled and frozen semen. We also offer an AI service for mare owners who would like to use external stallions and ET (embryo transfer) services at affordable cost.
Breeding
The breeding stock consists of broodmares of the currently highest ranked sport horse breeds in the world. We have 3 KWPN, 1 Hanoverian, 1 ISH, 1 BWP/Holstein. They all have top class performance pedigrees and have either proved themselves competing or as producers of top quality progeny.
All horses produced by the Stud are available for sale, although a couple of youngstock from each crop are needed for our student's education and practical training. We have sold youngstock to UK, France and USA.
We support British Breeding and from 2008 we have taken young stock to the BEF Futurity Youngstock Evaluations with great success; in 2008 Hartpury produced youngstock gained First Premium in Show Jumping, Dressage and Eventing with our KWPN filly Anastacia ending as 4th Best 3 y/o Show Jumper; in 2009 we showed three youngsters in Eventing resulting in High Score and Reserve High Score rosettes for all of them and Hartpury Top Gun ending as 5th Best 3 y/o Eventer. Stallions
Hartpury College owns 3 stallions, selected for various disciplines. ELITE graded Hanoverian Ragazzo is now retired from public stud duties. Our Eventing stallion is the Advanced Eventer Selle Francais stallion Take It 2 The Limit. He has proved to produce top eventers and show jumpers and from 2012 he will be available all breeding season.
Another stallion is our teaser, the young Sport Pony stallion Bernwode Benedict, who is Graded with SPSS. He carries top class international competition genes combined with genuine British blood.
For the breeder of Show Jumpers we are proud to offer a new, exiting KWPN stallion, Derby, who represents the most succesful SJ bloodlines of today. Derby is only 4 years old 2012 and will be available all breeding season. Derby is owned by Connorcourt Stud who also is the owner of Grade A SJ stallion Valesco (Selle Francais). Valesco comes from a family of horses that stays sound to very old age and will be a good choice for the breeder who is looking to breed a good allrounder with good temperament.
For the dedicated Dressage breeder we are very proud to offer the Sandro Hit son Sandros Dancer (Swedish Warmblood) who represents the best of modern German dressage blood combined with the best of Swedish dressage lines.
