The Stud
Moving from Laughtons Farm in 2001, the stud now enjoys purpose built facilities at Home Farm. The stud comprises of 22.31 hectares divided into paddocks for grazing stallions, youngstock, visiting and barren mares as well as pasture reserved for mares and foals.
Aim
The primary aim of Home Farm Stud is to provide our Hartpury students with an insight into how a commercial, modern Sport Horse stud successfully operates. Students gain theoretical knowledge from experienced members of the stud team and valuable hands-on practical experience.
Our commercial goal is to produce high quality British Sport Horses and to provide our services to mare and stallion owners to the highest level of quality.
In addition to education, producing youngstock and accepting visiting mares, the stud is utilised for research both by Hartpury students and externally run projects.
Facilities
Housing at Home Farm Stud is provided by large stables for the stallions and mares and barn space for the young horses. We have foaling boxes with CCTV and foaling alarms with the addition of 24 hour care provided by qualified, experienced staff living on site. There is also a semen laboratory, a collection area with phantom mare and stocks, to allow professional undertaking of the stud work. The stud has an outdoor arena and a walker for training and exercising the horses. From 2008 we have a separate yard for our young stock aged over two years with additional pasture, outdoor- and indoor schools and stabling in american barn.
Services
The stud is a DEFRA approved collection and insemination centre and stallions are available via AI; fresh, chilled and frozen semen. We also offer an AI service for mare owners who would like to use external stallions and ET (embryo transfer) services at affordable cost.
Breeding
Our breeding stock consists of broodmares of genuine British Eventing (Welton) blood and broodmares of the currently highest ranked sport horse breeds in the world. We have 4 KWPN, 1 Hanoverian, 1 ISH, 1 BWP/Oldenburg, 1 TB and 2 SHB(GB) mares. They all have either proved themselves competing or have a performance pedigree of top class. All horses produced by the Stud are available for sale, although a couple of young stock from each crop are needed for our student's education and practical training.
Hartpury College owns 3 stallions, selected for various disciplines. Our Eventing stallion is the Selle Francais stallion Take It 2 The Limit. He is lives with and is competed by Jeanette Brakewell and has been selected for the BEF Equine Pathway as a potential horse for the Olympic Games 2012. Take It 2 The Limit has qualified for Badminton and will be available at stud for a limited season after the event.
As resident stallion we are very proud to have the stunning Hanoverian stallion, Ragazzo (graded ELITE), who we managed to secure for UK breeders by purchasing him from Flyinge, the National Stud of Sweden in 2008. Ragazzo has competed to Advance Level Dressage, but he has proved himself to produce both dressage and show jumping horses of GP and international top class. He is the perfect match for TB mares to produce Eventers of highest potential.
The third stallion is our teaser, the young Sport Pony stallion Bernwode Benedict, who is Graded with SPSS. He carries top class international competition genes combined with genuine British blood.
For the breeder of Show Jumpers we are proud to offer the young Oldenburger stallion Coronado Son, whose exciting pedigree is built upon World Famous Show Jumpers. He is owned by Connorcourt Stud and combines his promising competition career with stud work.
