Bernwode Benedict passed his grading with the Sports Pony Studbook Society (SPSS) in 2006, becoming the society's first "second generation" stallion to license. His breeder, Bernwode Stud, is one of the most successful Sport Pony breeders in UK and their breeding philosophy is to produce British sport ponies with temperament, conformation and performance of top class for young British riders. Bernwode Stud kindly lent him to Hartpury College during breeding season 2008 to work as a teaser stallion. We have been so impressed by his personality and qualities, both as teaser and as stallion, resulting in the purchase of "Becks".
Bernwode Benedict boasts an outstanding temperament, good conformation and excellent jumping ability combined with correct, active paces. He is very trainable and shows great potential for dressage. With limited training due to lack of rider he has scored >72% in Prelim. Becks has also excellent jumping scope & technique. His proven European performance pedigree including the current leading Sire and Dam of UK Sports Pony breeding ensures a 'top class' sire of Sports Ponies.
His sire Bernwode Brokat was approved and licensed with Weser Ems Studbook in Germany, before being imported to Great Britain as a three year old. Brokat won at his first affiliated dressage competition early in 2002 setting the pattern for an excellent first season. Having won the selection trials for Blarney Dressage Festival in Ireland, Brokat and his 13 yr old rider went on to represent England, not only helping their team to Gold Medal victory but also taking the Individual Gold Medal on 73.5%! Brokat attended his first Premier League Show in 2004 achieving 5th place in the FEI Team test ahead of several experienced FEI ponies and two former European Team members. Brokat's bloodlines trace back to some of our superb Welsh ponies such as Bwlch Hill Wind. He also carries the time honoured Downland blood found in so many of the most successful ponies in both Great Britain and mainland Europe. Brokat has consistently produced top ponies and was the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Futurity Series ‘Leading UK Sire of Sports Ponies’. He is also awarded the SPSS’s prestigious “The Dancer Medal”!
Benedict's paternal grand sire Brillant was one of the most prolific sires of successful dressage and jumping ponies in Germany, having competed himself to a high level in both disciplines in open classes For three years he was the top sire of German competition ponies and within the top three sires for six years! He is famous for passing his kind, easy temperament and his athletic sporting ability to his children. Brillant sired many State Premium daughters and a remarkable total of thirty-four licensed sons!
Bernwode Benedict's Dam Evelina S was bred in Holland and registered with the NRPS with whom she later graded as a breeding mare. Subsequently she was also approved as a breeding mare by Weser Ems in Germany and SPSS in the UK. Evelina is one of the Bernwode stud's founder mares and has had six excellent foals from a variety of sires. Evelina was on loan, later sold, to Delaroche Stud where she had Benedict's full sister Delaroche Breve, born 2007. This filly was the highest marked 2008 BEF Futurity Sports Pony yearling with 9.5 for athleticism! At Futurity 2009 Evelina’s foal, Delaroche Laureve born 2008 by Lauriston (AES) was awarded ELITE premium. Evelina is currently the Futurity Leading UK Dam of Sport Ponies!
The maternal grand sire Prins Alfred is recognized in Holland as a brilliant sport pony producer. He competed in both SJ and Dressage and has sired many Champions and Keur- & Ster daughters. The maternal great grand sire Merrie Moscan was a notable purebred New Forest sire responsible for several generations of highly successful competition ponies throughout Europe. Bred in the UK at the Merrie Stud in Hampshire Merrie Moscan was exported to Holland where he produced a wealth of licensed sons and Ster daughters.

Bernwode Benedict was only used as a teaser stallion in 2008; from 2009, he was also offered as a breeding stallion. He has brilliant fertility showing 100% fertility on first cycle 2009, 83% on first cycle 2010 and 80% first cycle 2011. His first two foals were born 2010 and look very promising, both very much stamped by their sire's looks. Our own Hartpury Rockstar (out of Rose G) scored 18/20 for Athleticism at Futurity! Winston recieved First Premium as Dressage foal and Reserve High Score 2011. We are looking forward to seeing this year's foals.
Bernwode Benedict is suitable for most pony mares, especially those that need improvement of temperament, movement and jumping technique. He is also perfect for smaller sport horse mares to breed quality sport ponies of the ideal size for the international market, where good sport ponies often cost more than sport horses.
