SEN Tri Golf Festival at Dene Magna School

A Special Educational Needs (SEN) Tri Golf Festival for over 50 young people from seven schools across the Forest of Dean was held at Dene Magna School recently. The event was organised by School Games Coordinator and PE teacher Jayne Dews from Dene Magna and Alan Beard, Further Education Lecturer at Hartpury College.

Student leaders from Hartpury College took part in the event as part of their Higher Sports Leader (HSL) course which they are taking alongside their BTEC in coaching. The Hartpury students were key to making this festival successful as they coached various SEN pupils the skills of junior golf in a fun, professional and enthusiastic way.

The day was well supported by the head teacher and staff from Dene Magna. This type of event contributes to the governments new ‘School Games’ PE scheme to encourage more pupils to take part in sporting competitions and offering schools and pupils a pathway to community involvement within sporting activity.

Debbie Casling, Gloucestershire Officer for the County Golf Partnership was on hand to offer further opportunities to pupils and school staff to continue playing golf.  A special thank you should go to Hartpury student leaders who made this event a success with inspired guidance of Jayne Dews.
