Inspirational young athlete Scott Jones wins Disability Sports Person of the Year

When young athlete Scott Jones was struck down with stroke-like symptoms, no-one thought he would be competing again three months later. This remarkable spirit saw Jones, a member of Cheltenham Harriers, presented with a medal at last night’s glittering Gloucestershire Media Sports Awards ceremony.

Scott picked up the award for Disability Sports Person of the Year, sponsored by Hartpury College. The award recognises the individual who has shown significant passion, commitment and achievement at any age or level, in their chosen sport or who have demonstrated a commitment to providing opportunities for disabled people to access and participate in sport on a regular basis.

Since his illness, Jones has won gold in the shot putt, discus, 100m and 200m at the South West Schools' Disability Competition.

Katie Turnbull, an A level student studying at Hartpury was also a winner on the evening, scooping the Young Sports Personality of the Year award. Katie also plays rugby at the College and has represented Gloucestershire, the South West Divisional Under-18s and was selected in May for England Under 20s.
