Success for Rowing Academy at GB Junior Team Selection Trials

On Saturday November 19th, Rowing Academy AASE students Lauren Williams and Sarah Bonar travelled to Boston in Lincolnshire for the first round of selection trials for the GB Junior Team. The assessment comprised of a 5k time-trial in single sculling boats against around 90 other rowers from around the country. Selection trials for the GB Junior team take place throughout the year with the top 40-50 from this first assessment being invited back for a subsequent trial in February. Following this there is a further trial in April, followed by final selection in June/July where the GB team for the Junior World Rowing Championships is finalised.

Sarah Bonar had an extremely encouraging result at this first set of assessments, ranking ninth on the water, to go alongside her fourth place ranking in a recent 2000m assessment on the rowing machine. This suggests Sarah could potentially be a candidate for selection for the GB Junior team next summer and would be a remarkable achievement for someone who only took up the sport for the first time when arriving at the college last September.

Lauren Williams unfortunately suffered a collision early on in the trial which affected her result. However her speed over the second half of the course should be enough to get her an invite back for the second round of assessments in February.
