Aviva Premiership derby has distinct Hartpury flavour

The Hartpury College rugby community watched Gloucester Rugby’s 29-8 victory over local rivals Worcester Warriors in the Aviva Premiership on Saturday 10th September with immense pride, as no less than eight former and current students featured in the two matchday squads.

Lock Tom Savage, Hartpury College RFC’s captain in the 2010-11 season, was handed his full Premiership debut by Gloucester, and he was joined in the squad by Jonny May, who scored the Cherry and Whites’ first try, Charlie Sharples, Gareth Evans, Dan Robson and Henry Trinder.

Joe Carlisle started at fly half for Worcester, whilst Ed Shervington, who was selected for Wales U18 and U19 during his time at the College, was on the bench.

“To have eight of our current and former students taking part in a Premiership game at the same time is a remarkable statistic,” said Alan Martinovic, Hartpury’s Director of Rugby.

“This is testament to the many years of hard work put in by both players and coaching staff during their time in the Hartpury rugby programme. I hope that, in the not too distant future, a few more players will feature in games at this level.”
