Wins for Rowing Academy at Bristol Avon Regatta
On Saturday 19th May Rowing Academy students Will English and Dave Luffman competed in the Bristol Avon Regatta, at Saltford near Bath. English and Luffman, who are both first year National Diploma Fitness students, began rowing as part of the Academy in September, having been selected to come to Hartpury via the GB Rowing Team ‘Start’ talent identification scheme. Having spent the winter learning to row, this regatta was their first competitive racing experience of the summer season.
In Novice single sculls event both qualified for the final, with English beating a sculler from Monkton Combe School in his semi. In the final the two Hartpury rowers could not be separated, with an incredible race finishing in a dead heat.
The two then teamed up together to compete in the Novice double sculls event. In a dominant performance Hartpury beat opposition from Bristol University in the semi-final and Bryanston School in the final.
Given that English and Luffman took up the sport for the first time in September these results represent a great start for them in their competitive careers.
