Alan Martinovic – Director of Rugby/U18 Head Coach


Alan joined Hartpury in 2009 from Colston’s School, where he coached the 1st XV for 15 years. During Alan’s tenure, the Bristol school enjoyed unprecedented success - it won seven Daily Mail Cups, numerous other national and international titles and produced 83 schoolboy internationals and 11 full internationals, including the likes of Lee Mears, Olly Barkley and Gareth Delve, and established itself as one of the leading schoolboy rugby institutions in the world.

In Alan’s two seasons at Hartpury so far, during which time he has served as the Junior Academy Director, he has led the U18 1st XV to two consecutive RFU AASE League titles, with his side being named Rugby World Magazine and Rugby Times Schools Team of the Year for the 2010-11 season.

Alan’s coaching career has also seen him work as both Technical Director and Academy Manager at Bath Rugby, in addition to a three-year spell in charge of National Division Two South side Dings Crusaders, whom he led to their highest ever finish in that league.

Alan was promoted to overall Director of Rugby in 2011, and he now oversees the development of senior and U18 rugby, as well as continuing to coach the U18 1st XV.

John Barnes – Senior Academy Head Coach


After graduating from Loughborough University, John moved to Italy to play professionally in the Italian Super 10. He returned to the United Kingdom after one season and following a brief stint at Henley Hawks, John moved back to his hometown of Bristol and joined Clifton RFC, where he was to establish himself as one of the most deadly kickers in the National Leagues, amassing 1650 points in his 10-year spell at the club.

In his final three years at Clifton, John, an RFU Level 4 coach, also served as the club’s head coach, and in his first season in charge guided them back into National Division Two South after relegation and to an EDF Intermediate Cup Final at Twickenham.

John worked in a number of roles at Bristol Rugby, including Academy Coach and 1st XV Skills Coach, as well as acting as a Kicking Consultant to the Georgian, Portuguese and Romanian national sides in the lead up to World Cups and Nations Cups. He also coached Bristol University 1st XV in the 2010-11 season, in which they finished the year top of BUCS Premier League South A.

John joined Hartpury in the summer of 2011, where he coaches across the Rugby Academy and provides specialist kicking coaching.

Barry Maddocks – U18 Assistant Coach/AASE Programme Manager


Barry joined Hartpury in 2008 after two years of working for the RFUW, where he had a direct involvement in setting up the first women’s AASE rugby academy, based at Hartpury.

A young and ambitious coach, Welshman Barry has compiled a commendable list of achievements in his short coaching career so far. He has held significant roles within women’s rugby - he was head coach for the senior England Women’s Sevens team for the 2011 European Championships and led them to the title, and also coaches the England Women’s U20 squad.

Barry also has vast experience in the men’s and youth game – he was a Regional Development Officer for the Ospreys for seven years and assisted with the coaching of Wales U16s, as well as a spell as head coach of Dunvant RFC 1st XV, the first village club ever to reach the Welsh Premiership.

Now part of the Hartpury Rugby Academy, Barry manages both the boys’ and girls’ AASE programmes and assists with the coaching of the U18 1st XV, for whom he primarily serves as a backs coach. Alongside that, he coaches the Hartpury U18 Sevens squad - under Barry’s direction, they won the coveted South Coast Sevens Championship and reached the Grand Final of the HSBC Rosslyn Park National Schools Open Tournament in the 2011 season.

Danielle Waterman – Girls’ AASE Squad Head Coach


Danielle arrived at Hartpury in the summer of 2010 to manage the girls’ rugby AASE programme in a combined role with the RFUW.

England Women’s fullback Danielle has outstanding pedigree in the game, and is widely regarded as one of the best players on the planet. As of September 2011, she has earned 48 caps for her country and scored a remarkable 32 tries, and her performances at the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup, in which she helped England to the final, resulted in her nomination for the IRB Women’s Personality of the Year award. Danielle also represents England in sevens, and was nominated for the IRB Player of the Year and the IRPA Try of the Year in 2010. 

Her domestic playing career has seen her appear for some of the top women’s clubs in the country - she played for Clifton for five years and had a brief stint at Blaydon before she joined her current club Worcester in 2008.

In her first season at Hartpury, Danielle led the girls’ AASE squad to a prestigious sevens treble, winning the Cambridge, Berkhamsted Collegiate School and HSBC Rosslyn Park National Sevens Tournaments.

Darren Morris – Academy Scrummaging Coach


Darren joined Hartpury in 2010 at the end of a glittering playing career in the professional game.

Prop Darren, who earned 18 caps for Wales, first played for Neath before moving to local rivals Swansea in 1998. He made his international debut that year, and he was selected for the 2001 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia, where he played in the third test as a replacement for Tom Smith.

Darren moved to Leicester Tigers in 2003 following the regionalisation of Welsh rugby, and went on to have short spells at Worcester Warriors, Cardiff Blues and Northampton Saints before arriving at Hartpury as Academy Scrummaging Coach, which he combines with playing for Hartpury RFC.

Owen Satterley – Head Strength and Conditioning Coach


Owen is a UKSCA and NSCA accredited strength and conditioning coach. In his current role as Head S&C coach at Hartpury, he oversees the strength and conditioning programmes across the various Sports Academies including men’s and women's rugby, football, golf, netball, modern pentathlon and rowing. He also works within the government-backed Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) network, delivering S&C training to young elite athletes across several sports.

Before arriving at Hartpury in 2008, Owen worked with Gloucester Rugby and prior to that he spent time working in London, Australia and New Zealand as an S&C/Fitness Consultant covering various sports, including rugby union, rugby league, golf, swimming and surfing.
