Life on
Campus
Your days at university should be some of the best and most memorable days of your life. At Hartpury we understand the importance of the ‘student experience’ and work hard to ensure you have every opportunity to develop yourself academically, while having a great time and making lifelong friendships.
Hartpury is home to a vibrant and international community of students, of all ages and from many different cultures, who share their experience of life at college and university together on one campus.
While the College is also home to Further Education students, some of whom live on campus, there are dedicated areas for Higher Education students including a library area, common rooms and Legends Bar. In addition accommodation is segregated with under 18s being housed in separate Halls of Residence.
Students' Union
As a Hartpury Higher Education student, you will gain automatic membership to the UWE Students’ Union (UWESU). This means you can get involved in the wide range of activities and events taking place on the Hartpury and UWE campuses, enabling you to have the best of both worlds.
If you want to become more involved in campus life, you can join the Student Committee and help organise events and activities here on the Hartpury campus. Check out the UWESU website to find out more.
The Hartpury Freshers’ Week will be your initial opportunity to discover the range of great clubs and societies on offer and, if you have an interest we don’t cater for, you are welcome to start up something new. Some of our popular clubs include Young Farmers, Outdoor Pursuits, Skiing and Snowboarding, and the Equestrian Club. Joining in is a great way to meet people, fill your free time and, most importantly, have a good time!
Relax on campus
You can eat, drink and chill out between lectures at a number of venues on campus including The Equine Arena Restaurant, The Farm Diner, Penfolds Café and the main Student Restaurant. Penfolds Café and the main Student Restaurant are open throughout the day and in the evening. There is also Legends Bar - a social venue dedicated to our higher education students that holds weekly events and promotions.
Every other week, on your ‘study-free’ Wednesday afternoon there are opportunities for sport and recreational activities away from campus, which have previously included bowling, outdoor pursuits, paintballing and cultural trips.
Nightlife
The College and UWE Students’ Union run a number of lively events throughout the academic year including club nights with top DJs, balls, comedy nights, live gigs, quiz nights and karaoke. The noticeboards, Facebook and Student Intranet will keep you regularly updated with what is going on.
Gloucester and Cheltenham are a short distance away by road and run student nights throughout the week, offering NUS discounts on door entry, drinks promotions and restaurant offers. Traditionally, Wednesday is the big night out for Hartpury students, following a hectic afternoon of sport!
Sport and Exercise
We recognise that many students at Hartpury consider health and fitness a major part of their lifestyle. A comprehensive range of sporting activities and classes run throughout the week, including badminton, netball, basketball, squash, aerobics and yoga. There are opportunities to take part in cross-college competitions as well as fixtures with other colleges.
The Sports Academy Centre on campus provides an excellent training and fitness facility for all Hartpury students. Our gym instructors will help familiarise you with the equipment and design a training programme to help you achieve your fitness goals.
Other sports facilities available on campus or through partnerships with local sports clubs include:
- GL1 Leisure Centre & Swimming Complex
- South Cerney Outdoor Education Centre
- Seven Indoor and Outdoor Equine Arenas
- Golf Driving Range
- Newent Hockey Club
- Oxstalls Tennis Centre
