Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE)
The Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) is a sports performance programme that provides a structured training and development route across a number of sports for talented young athletes (aged 16-19), who have a real chance of excelling in their sport; either by competing on the world stage or securing a professional contract. The programme length varies depending on the sport but can be from six months to 24 months.
The AASE framework: AASE is a combination of three different types of learning:
- The NVQ: on-the-job performance-based qualification
- The technical certificate: students need to be enrolled on a Level 3 BTEC programme or A levels
- Functional skills: communication and numeracy at Level 2
You will also receive a minimum of 12 hours of sports development contact time each week with Hartpury’s team of nationally respected coaches, conditioners and physiotherapists, who understand the pressures facing elite players. This will be factored into your academic timetable.
Selection criteria: Selection on to the AASE programme is determined by your status within your sport. To be eligible for selection you will currently be either:
- A full-time contracted Apprentice at a professional club
- A full-time elite player receiving support from the lottery world-class programme and identified by your respective national governing body of sport
- Involved in the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS)
- Involved within an Academy environment
Hartpury College currently offers AASE programme opportunities in the following sports:

“The Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence is evidence of the commitment, from both the Government
and the industry itself, to the ongoing development of skills in the UK, and will have a major impact on the development of young athletes across a range of competitive sports. The programme will enhance both the vocational and academic skills of today’s and tomorrow’s sportsmen and women, while providing young people with information on wider career options within the sporting arena. SkillsActive, jointly with the Learning and Skills Council, has been working hard to give young athletes a sustainable career. The challenge now is to reach out to as many sports as possible.”
Phil Hope MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State For Skills
