The course:
This Extended Diploma has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to gain detailed academic knowledge and an in-depth understanding of horse management and equitation through theory-based and practical sessions. The outstanding equine facilities on campus will help to bring your academic studies to life, enabling you to put into practice what you have learnt in the classroom by riding and caring for the Hartpury loan horses.
Year one you will study:
Horse tack and equipment, preparation and presentation of horses for competition and sale, stable and yard management, animal biology, animal feeding, riding horses on the flat, working horses from the ground, horse behaviour and welfare, principles and practices of an equine stud and principles of equitation.
In Year two subjects include animal health, animal anatomy and physiology, work-related experience in the land-based sector, investigative project in the environmental and land-based sector, riding horses over fences, horse rehabilitation and therapy, equestrian teaching, riding and exercising horses, animal health and equine event management.

Additional entry requirements:
It is essential that you can walk, trot and canter in a safe and controlled manner. You must be riding at least at BHS Stage 1 standard. This will be assessed during your interview.
Academic progression:
When you have successfully completed your BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Horse Management (Equitation) you can progress to higher education at Foundation degree or full Honours degree dependent on your overall achievement. Equine-related degrees at Hartpury include Equine Performance and Equestrian Sports Science – both of which are popular study options for students who are looking to extend their knowledge further.
