HE Animal and Land
Programmes
Animals play a vital role in all of our lives. Domestic animals play a hugely important role. There are over six million dogs and five million cats in the UK alone, all who need nutritional, medical, welfare and behavioural support. Production animals are a staple food group for the majority of the UK and Worlds population. Animal agriculture and food production are becoming of ever increasing importance with the predicted rise in global population. Wildlife across the UK and the world is increasingly under threat. The study of their biology is important in ensuring the conservation of these species and maintaining the planets biodiversity.
Sustainable agriculture and land use are becoming ever more important with rising global populations, climate change and the competing demands society places on our use of land. In order to support the idea of sustainable land use, a global change of attitude needs to be adopted. An open-minded approach must be used so that new ideas and ways of doing things can be discovered and incorporated into existing agricultural and ecological practices.
Working with animals and on the land, whether it is in a veterinary, laboratory, conservation, agricultural or management setting, is a popular choice for many. Hartpury has developed a wide range of degree programmes to support these diverse industries. Our 2 year Foundation Degree programmes aim to give students valuable vocational skills that are required by employers in the animal and land industries. Foundation Degree students learn a wide range of theory but also get to gain valuable hands-on work experience through the placements that are part of these Foundation Degree programmes. This vocational experience gives students an advantage when seeking to work in employment working directly with animals and in hands-on industries such as agriculture and conservation. The 3 year Honours Degree programmes provide important theoretical knowledge as well as a range of laboratory and practical skills that employers are looking for. Our top-up degree in BSc (Hons) Animal Management is a one year programme that allows students to top-up a foundation degree (or equivalent) gained an another institution to a full BSc Honours degree.
