"Sixteen of us, including one young man, gathered in a lovely room of the Main House at Hartpury to learn about pruning - not just how, but when and why. We were instructed very ably, clearly and simply throughout by Mark Harwood-Brown.  Not only did he show slides but he had also gathered up plenty of examples from the garden so we could see the buds in the leaf axils and the diseases and blights on foliage. Mark explained, with examples, the reasons for different types of secateurs and long loppers. He also explained that it is essential to observe hygiene whilst using all garden tools, including spades and forks etc, and not just when putting them away: during the pruning process, disease can be spread to other parts of an otherwise healthy plant. After lunch we dealt with a few more aspects of pruning and went out for a garden trail to see examples of the various points that we had discussed.

I came away having learnt more in those few hours than I had done in all the years of watching or listening to gardening programmes.  Armed with my new found knowledge I will be out in my garden, hoping that next year it will be the envy of the neighbourhood!

I will certainly be applying to attend more courses at Hartpury and look forward to seeing many of you and your friends there as well."
