BHS Stage 2 Riding Preparation

The course

This course is designed to be taken either as a revision course for candidates wishing to take the BHS Stage 2 Riding examination or for students who simply wish to improve their riding.

The course will cover the requirements and standards of BHS Stages 2 in Riding.

There will be no assessment at the end of this course.

Areas of Study:

The course includes:

  • Basic riding position
  • School movements
  • Work without stirrups
  • Light seat
  • Use of artificial aids (whip)
  • Trotting poles
  • Lunging for Stage 2
  • Jumping a small course of show jumps
  • Riding outside

Entry qualifications:

Candidates must be physically fit in order to carry out the selected tasks and topics without undue stress and strain. Candidates must hold the BHS Stage 1 Riding and Horse Care & Knowledge certificate, NVQ L2 in Horse Riding or the Pony Club B test, or have studied BHS Stage 1 Preparation at Hartpury. The first session will be an assessment where candidates will be required to demonstrate their ability to ride a quiet, experienced horse or pony in an enclosed space.

Additional Information:

Students are required to wear a properly well-fitted hat to current BSI or Euro standard. A body protector is strongly recommended and is compulsory for any jumping.

Required clothing: Navy sweatshirt, navy or light coloured jodhpurs, dark hat silk, long boots or short boots with leather gaiters (not suede), whip, gloves.
