BHS Stage 3 Horse Knowledge and Care

The course

The course will cover the requirements and standards of BHS Stage 3, both in theory and practice and enables students to gain an insight into the BHS Stage 4 Horse Knowledge and Care examination. These courses will not include riding.

There will be no assessment at the end of this course

  • Bandaging for schooling
  • Fitting of saddlery
  • Travel procedures
  • Horse health
  • Minor ailments
  • Stable design
  • Feeding and fittening
  • The Foot & Shoeing
  • Behaviour
  • Grassland Care
  • Watering & Feeding

Practical 1
Tacking up for cross-country and elementary dressage, knee, hock and exercise bandages; bits and bitting

Practical 2
Assessing horses for conformation, lameness, ailments, methods of restraint, TPR, structure of the mouth, functions of muscles, tendons, ligaments, shoeing, stable construction and yard design

Theory 1
Nutrition, feeding and fittening, general knowledge, yard management and communications

Theory 2
Grassland, breeding, systems of the body.

Entry qualifications:

Students should hold BHS Stage 2 Horse Knowledge and Care, or equivalent, or have attended the Preparation courses at Hartpury before attending this course.

Additional Information:

Students are required to bring a riding hat to current BSI standards and appropriate warm, wet weather clothing and footwear. You may also like to bring a notepad and pen.
