Horticulture
facilities
Horticulture has extensive grounds within the College site which include:
- Walled Garden: Hartpury has a productive walled garden that was re-instated in 2008 and is still a “work in progress”. The Garden grows cut flowers, fruit and vegetables, together with herbaceous borders. It also houses the National Collection of Osmanthus (provisional status).
- Pleasure grounds: The Pleasure Grounds, as they were known at the turn of the last century, were designed and implemented by Thomas Mawson in 1907, a famous garden designer of the Arts and Crafts movement. The Gardens consist of original plantings of Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Sequoiadendron giganteum, Cedrus atlantica Glauca Group, and many other fine specimens; arboretum; terrace; lower lawn; sundial garden; lily pond.
- Glasshouses: Within the Walled Garden are housed large glasshouses for the production of plants that are used around the grounds and for the many shows put on by the College.
- Sports pitches: For those students who are studying sports turf and green keeping, the College has various sporting facilities that can be used for teaching purposes. These include all-weather football pitches, golf driving ranges, nine-hole pitch-and-put green and rugby pitches
- Amenity Grounds: Working alongside experienced, professional grounds staff, students have a chance to design, plant and maintain areas around the College campus.
