The nine week pre-sessional course gives the perfect introduction to studying at Hartpury College and preparation for taking the IELTS exam. The two week familiarisation course helps students understanding UK education system, Hartpury assessment system, and equips you with the skills you need to complete your study successfully in Hartpury.

The Course

The nine week course will focus on preparing you for the IELTS examination. There are four modules in the IELTS test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. This part of the course will give you intensive practice in each module, making sure you know exactly how to make the best use of your time. You will do practice tests in each skill under exam conditions and specialist teachers will give you feedback on your performance to help you improve.

You will take IELTS test on 25th August 2012. A test fee of £120 is included in the overall cost of the course. Tests will be booked by the college for you and transport will be provided. You will be able to receive test results in two week time.

The course will also help you to adapt to life in England and to equip you with the language skills necessary for successful academic study in the UK. You will become comfortable and confident with your English, and improve your performance in seminars and lectures. The course will also help you feel at home and settled at the College, so that when term starts, you will know your way around. You will improve your social English so that you will integrate with ease into UK society, and have a happy and productive time studying at Hartpury College.

Content

The course involves:

  • 20 hours English language practice per week led by teachers
  • highly qualified and experienced language teachers
  • IELTS preparation classes
  • IELTS practice tests
  • 10 hours self study time per week
  • help with listening to lectures
  • help with writing academic essays and reports
  • help with fluency, so that participating in seminars becomes easier
  • increasing your confidence in an English-speaking environment before your course starts
  • information about Gloucester and the college environment
  • development of your social English skills
  • development of your understanding on business management
Study facilities

You will be able to take advantage of the College's excellent study facilities. These include the library with its wide choice of course books, audio and video material, satellite television and internet access.

Social activities

In addition, trips and evening activities are organised for students to further develop an understanding of British culture and university life. Trips may include visits to top tourist destinations, such as London, Oxford, Bristol, Bath, Birmingham, and Weston- Super-Mare. Evening activities may include bowling, theatre, film evening, and going out for English meals.

Entry requirements

Evidence of English level is required before a firm offer of a place on any Hartpury College course) can be made and you should arrange to take an approved test of English (normally IELTS or TOEFL) at the earliest opportunity. You should include full details of scores obtained in such a test with your application form.

An IELTS score of 5.5 is required to gain access to this course.

The aim of the course is to achieve a 0.5 point improvement in your IELTS score. However, enrolment and participation on the course does not guarantee a 0.5 point improvement.
