Animal Health and
Welfare
The Animal Health and Welfare research group has a number of interests, relating to the factors which influence the wellbeing of animals. Staff are interested in alternative ways to treat animal diseases, including the use of essential oils and other plant extracts to treat the bacteria that cause disease. We are also interested in methods of environmental enrichment, such as mirrors or varied feeding techniques, which may impact upon production. Husbandry and housing are also investigated by the group, in order to improve the welfare of captive animals. Much of this research is undertaken at our own farm and laboratories, as well as with external partners such as Zoological Gardens and Higher Education establishments.
