The Scheme

Graduate Assistant Scheme 2011/12

As part of the commitment to supporting postgraduate study, the Associate Faculty offers a number of Graduate Assistantship positions (GAs) each year, for postgraduate research/study in the various subject areas covered by the Associate Faculty.

The Hartpury Graduate Assistantship (GA) Scheme has been developed to make postgraduate study affordable and to provide students with an opportunity to gain work experience. A limited number of bursaries and GA posts are available.

The Graduate Assistant scheme is designed to support high quality postgraduate research and to enable postgraduate students to contribute to the Associate Faculty teaching and general activities.

A range of GA roles are currently available within distinct areas, including:

  • Graduate Assistant (Academy Support)
  • Graduate Assistant (Laboratory/Practical Teaching Support)
  • Graduate Assistant (Academic Student Advisor)
  • Graduate Assistant (Equine Centre and Stud)
  • Graduate Assistant (Marketing)
  • Graduate Assistant (Administration)
  • Graduate Assistant (Learning Resource Centre)

More detailed descriptions of some of these roles may be found at the bottom of the page.

Particular roles will be allocated to individual Graduate Assistants following their appointment.  When allocating roles to Graduate Assistants the Associate Faculty will, where possible, take account of personal preferences and interests.

Graduate Assistant (Bursary and stipend)

Under the scheme, students may apply for a bursary, equivalent to a one third fee waiver from the current tuition fee and a grant/stipend in return for undertaking various support duties. Such duties may include running tutorials, leading seminars, offering assistance with laboratory classes and practical sessions, offering assistance on field classes, general administrative support or specific research. The value of the grant/stipend will be proportional to the amount of hours spent on these activities. GAs are required to undertake approximately 385 hours of duties (equivalent to a maximum of 11 hours per week).  The value of stipend awarded for undertaking these duties is currently £3053.

Students are required to undertake their GA duties alongside their academic study.  As part of the GA role, students may be required to work up to a maximum of 11 hours per week within one of the above areas (these hours are variable and may include work before 9.00am, after 5.00pm and at weekends).

Bursaries are only available to students who have applied for and been successful in obtaining a position as a Graduate Assistant. They cannot be applied for separately.

As the number of bursaries is limited, those applicants unsuccessful in obtaining a bursary will be considered for the stipend alone.

The scheme offers selected students the following potential benefits:

  • A one third reduction in tuition fees.
  • A stipend for contracted hours of duties (currently worth £3053)
  • An opportunity to obtain valuable work experience.
