Brushcutters and
Trimmers
Overview
This is a 2 day course covering the following modules
- Safety and legal requirements of a brushcutter/trimmer, with an emphasis on safe practices, warning signs and guards
- The correct protective clothing to wear and standards required
- Routine maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer's handbook
- Identification of faults and defects on a brushcutter/trimmer which the operator can easily remedy, and those which should be referred to a service engineer
- Which cutting head to select for the relevant operating conditions
- Correct fuel mixing and starting the brushcutter/trimmer from both a hot and cold condition in a safe manner
- Operating the brushcutter/trimmer in a safe manner, having regard for the safety of themselves, the public, property and environmental factors
- Systematic working operations
- Using the manufacturer's instruction book and parts list

None.
Additional Information:
Students must bring 2 passport sized photos, strong working boots, protective clothing and safety goggles, packed lunch and suitable drinks.
Students may use their own protective clothing and serviceable brushcutter as long as they comply with safety standards. The wearing of adequate personal protective equipment is insisted upon by the Health and Safety Executive and must be worn on the course.
Anyone who does not have their own brushcutter can obtain them from Hartpury College. Brushcutters must be requested at least 14 days before the start of the course.
Protective Clothing includes:
- Eye and full face protective goggles or visor
- Ear defenders
- Gloves adequate to protect hands against flying debris
- Working trousers adequate to protect legs against flying debris
- Safety boots with steel toe caps
Equipment required:
- Brushcutter complete and in good condition with cutting head adaptor bolts
- Manufacturer’s instruction book
- Manufacturer’s tool kit
- 2 stroke fuel mixed to manufacturer’s recommendations in an approved container
- Clean filter funnel
- Eye protection goggles (to EN 166)
- Cleaning cloths
Assessment is via integrated assessment and training by the trainer. Prices include LANTRA registration fee
