Apprenticeships 16-24

Apprenticeships – learn while you earn

To give yourself the best career prospects, it is important that you carry on developing your skills throughout your working life. Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to learn and gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst receiving a wage from your employer. If you are 16-24 and want a job that guarantees excellent training and money in your back pocket, an Apprenticeship could be right for you.

Why would your employer want to support you?

The advantage to your employer is that you are able to make a contribution to the business from day one. All of our Hartpury Apprenticeships are designed by senior professionals running successful businesses within your sector. This ensures that the training you receive with us is always relevant and tailored to the needs of you and your employer’s business, by people who understand what you do within your workplace. Your knowledge and skills will be up-to-date, and your commitment to your apprenticeship will demonstrate to your employer your enthusiasm and determination to succeed within the trade.

For 16-18 year olds there is no direct financial cost to you or your employer, as your course fees are paid for by the Skills Funding Agency. If you are 19 years + then there is a one off fee to be paid. Please contact our dedicated Centre for Rural Business (CfRB) for more information on 01452 702154.

What Hartpury can offer you

At Hartpury College we offer a range of Apprenticeships aimed at 16-24 year olds in the areas of Agriculture, Food Manufacturing, Business and Amenity Horticulture. Our Apprenticeships vary in length from twelve to twenty-four months, dependant on your course, your ability and your employer’s needs. We also offer flexible start dates, again to suit you and your employer. Apprenticeships do require a high level of commitment and motivation: you’ll be working for your employer one day and studying for your qualification the next.

Assessment

If you decide to undertake an Apprenticeship at Hartpury, our team of specialists will visit your place of work throughout the year to assess your practical skills. Our Amenity Horticulture Apprenticeship students generally come onto campus one day a week between October and April. The year of study for our agricultural apprentices is slightly longer - from September to June. We are also very flexible in regards to attendance, as we understand that during busy times at work this may be difficult.

Business Apprenticeships include Customer Service, Business & Administration and Team Leading. Students studying in these areas will attend workshops at Hartpury to gain the underpinning knowledge required for them to carry out their job role.

Qualifications

Many of our Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships provide the following qualifications (dependant on course):

  • A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2 or Level 3
  • Key Skills Qualifications such as working with others, problem solving, communication and Information Technology
  • A Technical Certificate (National Awards, Certificates and Diplomas)
  • Opportunities to study for other qualifications or undertake training needed for particular occupations (for example: All Terrain Vehicle training; Chainsaw Operation NPTC Certificate; Courses in the Safe Use of Pesticides; Knife Skills; Carcass breakdown; Personal Effectiveness and Communication Skills ).

Entry Requirements

There are no set entry requirements for our Apprenticeships (NVQ Level 2 standard). If you are interested in studying for an Advanced Apprenticeship (NVQ Level 3 standard), there are two entry routes available. You will either have completed an Apprenticeship and are progressing onto Level 3, or you have the relevant experience and skills and are in suitable employment. Advanced Apprenticeships are aimed at 16-24 year olds who have the potential and ambition to work at a Supervisory Management or Technician level.
