The course
Food and drink manufacturing is a major part of the food chain, encompassing a number of product sectors, including cereals, beverages, confectionery and snacks, fish, fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry and oils and fats. There are over 6,500 companies across Britain associated with food and drink manufacture and sales, accounting for 12 per cent of total employment in the country. Employees working within the sector traditionally have had few opportunities for gaining related qualifications until now. This course will give you the opportunity to kick-start or develop your own professional career whilst bringing new skills and knowledge into your workplace.
You will gain an in-depth understanding of the scientific nature of food products, including the impact of the composition and microbiology of food materials on the production of safe and high-quality end products. The programme will cover the principles of food science, food processing operations, food microbiology and food legislation.
This Foundation degree is a vocationally focused programme specifically aimed at employees working within the food and drink sector. You can combine study with work at a pace that suits both you and your employer: the course is usually completed within three to four years part-time, or two years if full time.
