A Level in English Literature

If you enjoy reading a wide range of novels, poems and plays, and writing essays about them, then read on. You must be prepared and motivated to do a great deal of reading in your own time and ready to share your critical ideas with the other students in your lecture group. This subject will help you become a well informed and effective communicator and an independent thinker.

English Literature relates well to all other A Level subjects: it is the perfect complement to subjects such as History, Psychology and English Language, but also sits well alongside the science A Levels, especially if you are considering medicine or veterinary science.

The skills you acquire through English Literature will enable you to consider a range of degree courses and a range of career paths in areas such as journalism or other branches of the media, education, law or practically any profession where you need to read thoughtfully and express yourself clearly and fluently in writing and in speech.

At Hartpury, we follow the WJEC English Literature specification. For more information, click here

A Levels are currently selected from three option blocks that have been grouped to maximise choice, with one choice from each block, and dedicated study time is allocated for A Level students living on site. The A Level timetable is specifically designed to allow students to access compulsory enrichment.

Some of these enrichment programmes enable students to gain an additional qualification that can boost their UCAS tariff points, such as pre-medicine, while the pre-veterinary programme is popular with A Level students hoping to study veterinary medicine at university. Others enrichment activities include astronomy club, conversational Spanish and recreational sport. Please note that places are limited on some enrichment programmes.
