Hartpury College

At Hartpury, a degree is so much more than a piece of paper.

We work with industry leaders, professionals clubs and top companies in the UK and throughout the world to open doors to incredible opportunities for our students – from exciting work placements to amazing jobs.

But perhaps the most special thing about Hartpury is that there are so many opportunities for our students across all areas to gain real world experience on our own specialist campus.

Our equine students are particularly spoilt on that front. Whether you're studying Equine Management, Performance, Science or Sports - from coaching to therapy and science - our new state of the art Rider Performance Centre, our own commercial yard and Equine Therapy Centre with its impressive water treadmill, plus our three international equestrian events, provide students with work experience and exceptional industry contacts and partnerships on their doorstep.

Take Equine Business Management student, Jess Allies, for example, who was a major events administrator during the NAF Five Star International Horse Trials at Hartpury, working with world class OIympic riders and commentators, collecting scores and even getting involved with the building of the cross-country course.

And as a Sport student at Hartpury, whether you choose to focus on Sport and Exercise Nutrition, Science, Performance, Coaching, Business Management or Therapy, you benefit from the opportunity to work with elite athletes and top level coaches from our eight academies in an environment that’s as close as it gets to a professional club.

Take Tim Bell (pictured) for example. During his six years at Hartpury, he combined his studies with a role as full-time coach for Hartpury’s senior football team and Elite Sport support officer. He also carried out a performance lifestyle assistant role.

Tim said: “The opportunity to study and coach in the elite sports programmes meant I learned from the very best every day and supported my development though coach education courses and networking. The invaluable experience and the contacts I made at Hartpury undoubtedly led to me securing my current role with the Right to Dream Academy, where I discover and nurture young footballers hoping to emulate their heroes in Ghana.”

And for our Agriculture students, our new Farm Classroom offering stunning views to May Hill leads out to 12 demonstration crop plots so the students can pop their wellies on and take what they have learned in their lectures and apply it immediately in a practical setting, enhancing their understanding of crop management and production and how it relates to industry.

Having a classroom in the middle of a fully working commercial farm –with 250 milking cows, 80 calves, 600 sheep and arable land - really sets Hartpury apart. Students help out with lambing, milking, calving, rearing and observe veterinary procedures. Our new farm facility at Okle Clifford is also at the heart of a new farm biodiversity project, offering exceptional opportunities for research. We've also just launched new degree pathways in Conservation, Agriculture and Sustainable Management.

For Animal students, from Animal Management, Behaviour and Welfare to Animal Science with Therapy, there are opportunities to learn about and work with a wide variety of small and large domestic and exotic species – not only with our on-site animal collection but at the farm and in the canine hydrotherapy and equine therapy centres. It’s the best possible preparation for a career in the industry.

Our fantastic new walled garden animal collection is the home of meerkats, prairie dogs and four aviaries, while our expanding collection also includes wallabies, llamas, and even piranha! Plus dedicated dissection and microbiology laboratories help students put into practice what they learn in lectures.

Some of the exciting careers our graduates have gone on to include dog handler with the British Army, wildlife ranger in Australia, biodiversity field officer, CEO for British Dressage, national equine journalist, performance analyst at Liverpool Football Club and academy coach for Welsh Rowing. Many others have set up their own successful businesses.
