From protecting turtles in the Seychelles and training monkeys in Kenya to working with the international stars of the equestrian world, managing wildlife in stunning nature reserves and mixing it with Bradley Wiggins on major cycling tours, work placements at Hartpury can provide the ultimate real-world work experience for our students.
We pride ourselves on our strong partnerships with businesses and professional and national governing bodies in the UK and worldwide. In every subject area, we have teaching staff who are leaders in their field and at the cutting edge of research and industry developments. That all adds up to a network of excellent contacts that open doors to dream work placements and sandwich year opportunities for our students.
Take Zoe Jackson, pictured, for example, who was supported to secure a work placement funded by a scholarship set up in memory of Rich Wigram, who died in 2010 after an accident on his farm in New Zealand at the age of 34. It offered young people in the UK the opportunity to experience dairy farming in New Zealand. Now in her final year, Zoe intends to specialise in researching dairy cow nutrition or genetics and to go on to her dream career as a feed specialist or analyst.
Other Animal and Land students have spent their work placements carrying out conservation work in wildlife reserves in South Africa and the Seychelles and working in zoos while our partnership with organisations like the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and International Birds of Prey Centre provide students with work experience much closer to home.
In Equine, we’ve had students complete their sandwich year with horse welfare charities in Egypt and with national magazines, but our new Rider Performance Centre, own commercial yard and Equine Therapy Centre, plus our three international equestrian events, also provide students with work experience and contacts within the industry on their doorstep.
As a Sport student at Hartpury, you will benefit from direct access to the professional clubs and organisations that work with us for your work experience. Sports Coaching student, Tom Reynolds, for example, worked full-time as the Academy Performance Analyst for Gloucester Rugby while studying at Hartpury, and four Sports Business Management students had the chance to work alongside the world’s cycling elite at the 2014 Tour of Britain, being involved in the planning, branding and sponsorship for the event.
And with opportunities to work with elite athletes and top level coaches from our eight academies in an environment that’s as close as it gets to a professional club, there really is no place like Hartpury to make your career ambitions come true.
And it’s no wonder that so many of our students go on to secure permanent positions with the organisations where they carried out their work experience.
Our students have gone on to some fantastic careers in a wide range of industries and enjoyed some exceptional work placements all over the world, helping them open doors to their dream careers. You can read our students’ stories here
