Course Overview

This innovative international horseracing business degree, which is new for September 2017, has been developed with input from the horseracing industry to prepare graduates for the varied and highly commercial world surrounding the business of horseracing. And studying for a degree at Hartpury University Centre will give you unrivalled access to the horseracing and wider equine industry within the world’s largest equine institution.

Students will be given a solid foundation of knowledge in core business subjects alongside developing a broad understanding of the international horseracing industry and they will be ready to hit the ground running in a wide range of careers in this exciting sector when they graduate

Topics of study on this specialist degree programme could include areas such as hospitality, sponsorship, media and the bloodstock business while exposing students to wealth of practical and work experience opportunities, including industry-led experiences and projects, thanks to Hartpury’s exceptional contacts within the equine industry. These include long-standing relationships and partnerships with key governing bodies, racecourses and equine companies, including the British Horseracing Association, Cheltenham Racecourse, Natural Animal Feeds (NAF) and Baileys Horse Feeds.

And of course, Hartpury University Centre is ideally situated within the horseracing world - in close proximity to Cheltenham and with many prominent trainers basing their business in and around Gloucestershire.

The international horseracing business degree can be completed full time in three years, or four years with an optional sandwich year spent working within the horseracing industry or another equine or related business. Part-time routes are also available. The course incorporates several opportunities for ‘live’ projects and a placement will be an essential component within the second year of study for all students.

An integral study trip will allow students to experience the horseracing business environment first hand and provide key networking opportunities for students to build their contacts and possible mentors, opening doors to the array of graduate careers on offer in this sector. Students will be encouraged to engage in various trips and visits during their degree studies. While many of these are included in the course fees, there will also the opportunity to engage in additional significant study tours, including experiencing international racing practices. It is estimated these costs could be approximately £1800.

As well as core modules, students on the international horseracing business degree will have the opportunity to pick from a range of optional modules, enabling them to tailor the degree to their personal strengths and areas of industry interest.

Several Hartpury Equine and Business graduates have already gone on to forge successful careers within the horseracing industry, including marketing and commercial roles at Thirsk and York racecourses, an exciting graduate placements with the British Horseracing Authority with Newmarket Jockey Club  Racecourses and working for the Irish National Stud. A former Hartpury student has even gone on to become the UK’s youngest racehorse trainer!
