Course Overview

If you have a passion for outdoor sports and have a desire to work in sport and outdoor adventure, then this course is a great introduction for your career. 100% of Outdoor Adventure students go on to further study and employment after completing their course.

What You'll Learn

You will study and develop practical skills in a variety of outdoor sports and learn about subjects such as assessing risk, environmental education, leadership, anatomy and physiology, leading outdoor and adventure activities and gaining expedition experience

You will be able to gain professional qualifications during your course. These include National Governing Body awards from the Royal Yachting Association, British Canoe Union, National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme and National Navigation Awards.

Extra-curricular trips include a visit to the Outdoor Show, snow sports trip and windsurfing and sailing at coastal locations. We also use our strong links with local schools to enable you to deliver a range of outdoor activities to children and young people. Students in year two of the Level 3 programme also have the opportunity to take part in a fully paid work placement with an outdoor adventure company in the UK or Europe.

Our team of staff have a wide range of experience in the industry as instructors, coaches, lecturers and outdoor practitioners. Our knowledge, experience and passion for the outdoors will help you develop your skills and explore your career options.


Hartpury is in a central location, ideally situated to take advantage of the Forest of Dean, Malvern Hills and the River Wye and Severn for a range of outdoor activities.  Students will also have access to facilities on site such as the Fitness suits, Power gym and the Performance analysis suite as well as a range of external outdoor activity facilities.

Entry Requirements


Two GCSEs at grade C or above which must include English Language and either Mathematics or Science.


There is an additional charge of £200 to pay for National Governing Body registrations, log books and certificates. Any unused monies will be refunded after completion of the course.

Due to the practical and physical nature of this course you are strongly encouraged to consider whether it is right for you.

Tuition fees

Students under 19 on 31 August 2016 are free (full time courses only). Examination fees for main qualifications are also free.

Students aged 19 to 23 may need to pay tuition fees.  We may be able to waive your fees if you are unemployed and receiving Jobseekers Allowance, studying your first full level 2 qualification or level 3 qualification. 

Students aged 24 and over.  You may need to pay for your course.

Educational visits charge: An annual £65 fee is payable for all students and covers the cost of outside visits, special speakers and a contribution to the cost of administration.

When should I apply

We welcome applications for September 2016 entry from October 2015 onwards. You do not have to wait for your GCSE results.
