The Mitsubishi Motors Hartpury Horse Trials 2010

Equestrian Sport at its Best!

This year sees Hartpury Horse Trials Return for the 8 th Year. We are extremely grateful to Mitsubishi Motors for their continued support and sponsorship.

Starting as a CCI* and CCI** event in 2002 and then in 2006, expanding to include CIC*** the Hartpury Horse Trials have gone from strength to strength, missing only one year in 2007 due to the great Gloucestershire floods. The Mitsubishi Motors Hartpury Horse Trials has established itself as a firm favourite amongst competitors in the Eventing calendar; providing four days of outstanding equestrian sport, including a weekend packed full of top Cross Country competition, two days of dressage and two days of show jumping as well as a great social occasion for all! The Burghley Dubarry Young Event Horse Series will start the week off on Wednesday 11 th August, providing enthusiasts with the opportunity to spot world-class event horses of the future.  In addition to the eventing action, there will also be the opportunity to 'shop-to-you-drop' in the Trade Stand Village and sample some excellent local food and wines.

Hartpury provides a magnificent setting for this all round test of horsemanship; with top international course designer, Eric Winter, designing a Cross Country course that will challenge competitors and delight spectators. The spectacular Equine Arena Indoor and Outdoor Complex provides the perfect setting for the Dressage and Show Jumping phases of the competition.

The event has attracted big names over the years including the likes of Zara Phillips, Oliver Townend, William Fox-Pitt, Bettina Hoy, Mark Todd and other world renowned stars of Eventing.

Wednesday, 11th August

The Burghley Dubarry Young Event Horse Series - Open to four and five year old horses has been a popular element of Burghley Horse Trials for over 20 years.  The brainchild of Bill Henson during his term as Director, it is still acknowledged as the shop window to view potential ‘four star’ horses at an early age.

Thursday, 12th August

CCI* and CCI** Dressage - Outdoor Complex
The 160 strong field in the CCI* and CCI** started the Dressage at 8.30 am.

Taking part in the CCI* is Alex Grinstead riding his own Broomfield Brazil. Alex is an Equine Academy student here at Hartpury College studying a National Diploma in Horse Management (Business) and receives training from Nick Burton, the Director of the Equine Academy and also Corinne Bracken, the Show Jumping coach.  At the end of the first day of Dressage Alex is in 13th place.

Friday 13th August

The CCI* Dressage continued in brilliant sunshine in the Outdoor complex.
At the end of the second day the first  four placings remained the  exactly the same!             1st Valentino Vollante and Leonard Goerens (FRA)  42.1 2nd  Ottentik Nobless and Jessica Acheson (GBR) 43.7, 3rd Thomas Patey and Sarah Jepp (GBR) 44.0, 4th Hathors Grace and Lucinda Fredericks (AUS) 45.3.
CIC*** Section C
Taking part in the CIC*** is another Hartpury Equine Academy rider Meaghan Miranovich, an international student from the USA, studying a Foundation degree in Equine Sports Science riding her own Ahlerich.

Saturday 14th August

The start of day saw a change in the weather conditions with heavy overnight rain that continued well into the afternoon. Despite this the beautifully constructed course, designed by Eric Winter, which had been watered continuously for the last ten days and Equivated on Friday, was in perfect condition for the CCI* competitors to begin their Cross Country phase. 
The remaining competitors in the CIC*** completed their Dressage in persistent heavy showers amidst brief glimpses of warm sunshine.

CCI* Section A – Results after the Cross Country
Leonard Goerens (FRA) remained in 1st place after the cross country phase riding Valentino Vollante on 43.7 despite picking up a time fault of 1.6 to add to his Dressage score. Louisa Gleeson (NZL) on Up Tempo gained three places to take 2nd place having gone clear cross country and goes through to the Show Jumping phase on her Dressage score of 46.0. Elisabeth Halliday (USA) lies in 3rd place on Newmarket Malt also went clear to finish on a score of 47.0.
Hartpury Equine Academy rider Alex Grinstead finished the day in 78th place, having had a refusal on the cross country and 11.2 time penalties making a total of 82.4.

CCI** Section B  - Results after the Cross Country
The positions of the first two competitors remained unchanged after the cross country, with Ludwig Svennerstal (SWE) going clear on Shamwari 4 40.6 and Mark Todd (NZL) in 2nd place going clear on NZB Campino 41.9. Jonelle Richards (NZL) on Reminiscent gained two places to go into 3rd place on 44.7.

CIC*** Section C - Results after the Dressage
The Australians continued their dominance with Sam Griffiths (AUS) in 1st place on Happy Times 41.2 and Bill Levett (AUS) on One Two Many NJ 44.0 equal 2nd with Laura Collett (GBR) riding Ginger May Killinghurst 44.0. 4th Piggy French (GBR) and Jakata  44.8.

CIC*** Section C  - Results after the Dressage and Show Jumping
Both Bill Levett (AUS) and One Two Many NJ  and Laura Collett (GBR) and Ginger May Killinghurst  jumped super clear rounds  to take  equal 1st place, Happy Times and Sam Griffiths (AUS) had two fences and 3 time penalties dropping down the line. Piggy French (GBR) and Jakata also went clear to move into 3rd place 44.8, 4th Miners Frolic and Kristina Cook (GBR) 46.5.

CIC*** Section D after the Dressage
Andrew Nicholson (NZL) held on to his overnight lead on Mr Cruise Control 41.9, ahead of Piggy French (GBR) and Flying Machine 42.9, 3rd Georgie Davies (GBR) on Orlando 44.6 and    4th William Fox Pitt (GBR) on Cool Mountain 45.4.

CIC*** Section D after Dressage and Show Jumping
Andrew Nicholson (NZL) and Mr. Cruise Control continued to lead 41.9, 2nd Georgie Davies (GBR) and Orlando 44.6 after Piggy French and Flying Machine had a fence down and 2 time penalties and dropped down to 5th position, 3rd Kitty King (GBR) and High Havoc 46.0 and 4th Andrew Nicholson (NZL) and Nero 47.3

Hartpury College’s own horse Take It 2 The Limit ridden by Jeanette Brakewell rolled a pole in the show jumping to finish on a score of  61.3.

Sunday, 15th August

After a cloudy start the sun came out for the final day.

CCI* Section A –Final Results
The show jumping phase in which the competitors jumped in reverse order of merit proved very exciting and the order changed dramatically!  Helen West (GBR) and Mon Chappelle jumped a lovely round inside the time to win the 1st prize of £700 on a score of 47.3.
The overnight leader Leonard Goerens (FRA) and Valentino Vollante unfortunately rolled a pole and had 3 time penalties finished in 5th place, Louisa Gleeson (NZL) and Up Tempo had 12 faults, Elizabeth Haliday (USA)  and Newmarket Malt had 8 faults.  Georgie Spence (GBR) and KBIS Starlet jumped clear to move into 2nd place on a score of 49.9, 3rd place went to Andrew  James(GBR) and Esko  who moved up from 13th position 50.2  and 4th place went to Lucy Wiegersma (GBR)  and Jeopardy 50.4
The 1st prize, a beautiful cut glass claret jug was presented to Helen by the FEI 1* President of the Ground Jury, Mary Robbins (NZL) accompanied by Malcolm Wharton, the Principal and President of the Event.    The groom of the winning horse received a prize kindly donated by Charles Ruggles Clothing, a local company based in Upton on Severn. 17 year old Katie Bleekman (GBR) and Prince Apollo, who finished in 7th place received the Dennis Ivan Memorial Trophy for being the highest placed youngest rider. Dennis Ivan was a cross country steward at Hartpury Horse Trials for many years and he was also the District Commissioner for the local Ledbury Pony Club.

CCI** Section B -  Final Results
Again the competitors show jumped in reverse order - Francis Whittington (GBR) and Solo Voyage had 12 faults and 3 time penalites, Jonelle Richards (NZL)  and Reminiscent had 12 faults and Ludwig Svennerstal (SWE) and Shamwari 4, who had been in the lead from day one, rolled two poles to finish in 4th place 48.6  Mark Todd and NZB Campino, owned by New Zealand Bloodstock Ltd, jumped a beautifully composed round to take 1st prize on a score of 41.9. 2nd place went to Chris King (GBR) and Miss Caruso 46.3, 3rd place James Adams (GBR) on Pebbly Aga Khan 46.3.
The prizes were presented by theFEI** President of the Ground Jury Andrew Bennie (NZL) and Sally Lidsey (GBR).  The groom of the winning horse received a prize from Charles Ruggles Clothing. 

CIC*** Section D – Final Results
The beautifully constructed cross country course rode extremely well and Andrew Nicholson (NZL) and Mr Cruise Control held on to the lead despite picking up 1.2 time penalties to finish on a score of 43.1, 2nd place Kitty King (GBR) and High Havoc 48.4, 3rd place Georgie Davies (GBR) and Orlando 52.2 4th place Andrew Nicholson (NZL) and Nereo 54.1.
The prize of £1500 was presented by Sharon Townsend, General Manager of Mitsubishi Motors in Cirencester.

CIC*** Section C – Final Results

Piggy French


The star prize - a Mitsubishi ASX 4 wheel drive car and Silver bowl was won by Piggy French (GBR) and Jakata on a score of 48.0.  Piggy and Jakata are part of the British squad going to the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, USA at the end of September.  2nd Andrew Nicholson (NZL) and Avebury 49.2, 3rd Emily Llewellyn (GBR)  and Pardon  Me II 54.5 4th Lucie McNichol (GBR) and Zeus of Rushall, 55.5

Sharon Townsend of Mitsubishi Motors presented the keys to Piggy and then she drove around the Arena to do her ‘lap of honour’ with Andrew and Emily as her passengers!

Top Riders to compete at Hartpury

Over 400 entries have been received for the Mitsubishi Motors Horse Trials which are to be held at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire on Wednesday 12th to 15th August. Entries received from leading British riders include - Mary King, William Fox-Pitt, Ruth Edge, Pippa Funnell, Sharon Hunt, Jeanette Brakewell and Lucy Wiesgersma together with International riders from 17 nations including Badminton winner Paul Tapner, (AUS), Mark Todd (NZL), Andrew Nicholson (NZL), Sam Griffiths (AUS), Lucinda Fredericks (AUS), Alex Hua Tian (CHN), and Dag Albert (SWE).

The major CIC*** competition starts with Dressage from 8 am on Friday and Saturday. Show Jumping on Saturday from 2.30 pm and Cross Country from 10.30 am on Sunday. The first prize being £1500 plus a brand new Mitsubishi car to keep!

Meanwhile the 200 strong field in the CCI* and CCI** start the Dressage at 8 am on Thursday and Friday, Cross Country at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday and Show Jumping Sunday from 10 am.

This year the beautifully constructed cross country course, designed by Eric Winter, runs over the stunning parkland with a new route from the exciting water complex which will challenge competitors and delight spectators.

The spectacular Indoor Equine Arena and Outdoor Complex provide the perfect setting for the Dressage and Show Jumping phases of the competition.

There will be a variety of Trade Stands including country clothing, jewellery and fashion accessories, saddlery and equestrian products.

Full catering, fast food outlets and bar facilities will be available throughout the event.

Admission is free on Thursday and Friday. Saturday and Sunday - £10 per person, children under 10 free. Free Car parking.

Location: Hartpury is situated on the A417, four miles north of Gloucester. The Event will be signposted from the M5 and M50.
