BSc (Hons) Animal Behaviour & Welfare

The BSc (Hons) Animal Behaviour & Welfare experience includes:

  • A range of science based modules to give you a thorough grounding in the application of science to the study of behaviour and welfare in a variety of animals.
  • Field practicals that observe behaviour and assess welfare of a range of species.
  • Different forms of assessment. Everybody learns in different ways, so there is a real variety included. Most involve the practical application of scientific principles and can take the form of oral presentations, production of leaflets, posters as well as assignments and exams.
  • Visiting guest lecturers including experts working in a range of positions in the area.
  • Complementary studies including first aid, risk assessment, riding, health and safety courses and computer training – all highly valued by employers.
  • A graduate development programme which assists in developing your academic and transferable skills.

You have choices!
Students can tailor the course to individual needs and areas of interest through specific core modules and a variety of optional modules

  • Core modules have been chosen to provide a ‘backbone’ to the course. Through consultation with expert staff, previous and current students and employers, fundamental subjects such as Animal Behaviour, Anatomy & Physiology, Animal Welfare Assessment and Ethics & Welfare feature on this programme.
  • A number of optional modules allow you to choose subject areas which you are interested in and may influence your chosen career path, such as Companion Animal Behaviour and Training, Farm Animal Behaviour & Animal Psychology.
  • Selection of optional modules is carried out at the beginning of each year and can be changed within the first three weeks of each semester (2 semesters per academic year). This gives each student the chance to attend the first few lectures of each module before making a final decision.
