A group of former Hartpury students have shot to the top with a near perfect score at the recent Christmas Cup clay shoot at Nigel Harts in Monmouthshire.

Brothers Jack and Charlie Lilwall, George Poultney and George Wilson, a mixture of agriculture, countryside management and farm mechanisation graduates, combined to finish first with a score of 95 out of 100 at the former Welsh Open site.

A team of current students also did well to finish sixth out of 54 entrants, shooting 88 out of 100 possible targets. BTEC Diploma Game Management student Cormac Thompson, 17, finished fourth overall with a score of 46 out of 50. Adam Osbaldiston, Matt Davies and Hugo Peerman made up the rest of the team which found themselves as the only college side in the competition, up against university current students and graduates.

Hartpury Gamekeeping Lecturer, Robbie Nicolle, said: “This was a great achievement by both teams considering one was the only current college team entered and the others have only recently graduated. The conditions were tough on the day with high winds and the boys shot incredibly well with the clays varying hugely.”
