Hartpury golfers grab glory at Gloucestershire championships

Hartpury golfers grab glory at Gloucestershire championships

Hartpury College will provide more than half of Gloucestershire’s golf team at this year’s South West Championships after dominating the Schools Championships at Tewkesbury Park for a second year running.

Joe Harvey, who took the spoils in the boys’ gross event, will be joined by Alex Chalk and Alex Ireland in the boys’ team. Harvey claimed the top prize with a narrow one shot victory from Chalk. The trio will play alongside Cheltenham College’s Harrison Ottley-Wood, Marling’s Jack Cope and Balcarras’ Matthew Bell.

Tara Rodenhurst scooped top spot in the girl’s gross event by a single shot from fellow Hartpury student Victoria Wakeley-Jones – with the pair both qualifying to represent Gloucestershire at next month’s event. The girls will be joined by Cheltenham Bournside student, Claudia Ovens.

Hartpury also kept with tradition by winning the gross and nett divisions in the team event – a feat they also achieved a year ago.

Alex Ireland was joined by Lloyd Davies and Matt Green as Ireland and Davis’ level par nett scores of 72 gave them a five shot winning margin over another Hartpury team made up of Alex Chalk, Kobe Adams and Nick Ramshaw.

Chalk’s team also found themselves runners up in the gross division, this time to another all-Hartpury team. Joe Harvey, Kieran Sutton – who lit up last year’s championship with a six-under-par 63 – and Nathan Schmidtke battled to a narrow one shot victory over their college compatriots.

Hartpury will have 5 of the 9 Gloucestershire representatives at next month’s South West finals which will take place back at Tewkesbury Park as it’s Gloucestershire’s turn to host the tournament. The teams will be looking to repeat last year’s outstanding feat of winning every event in both the girls’ and boys’ sections.

Hartpury’s golf manager, Rich King, said “It’s great to see another Gloucestershire team made up of a strong Hartpury contingent. Everyone competed really well at the event and the Gloucestershire team is looking really strong heading into a home finals. It’s good to see that our programme is able to continually compete with the best young talents in the county.”

Hartpury’s golfers are enjoying a purple patch at the moment having also qualified for the British Schools and Colleges Tour (BSCT) and the Intercollegiate Tour (ICT) Finals, with both taking place in May.

Alex Chalk’s four-under-par 69 saw Hartpury seal their place in the finals at The Duke’s Course in St. Andrews. Joe Harvey claimed top spot in the competition’s order of merit.

The team made lighter work of the Intercollegiate Tour, sealing their final spot by winning both the gross and nett divisions with one round remaining. It was Chalk this time who picked up the order of merit title.

Tara Rodenhurst and Courtney Boyes (pictured) also qualified for the national finals at St. Anne’s Links by finishing as the leading two girl’s in Area D.

Hartpury also picked up a fourth place finish in a tightly fought AoC National Open Championship. Sam Boffin, Joe Harvey, Alex Chalk and Tom Davies were hampered by poor weather over the closing holes to finish 2 shots off a medal position. Chalk was the highest placed individual in fifth, just three shots behind the winner.

Representing the West Midland’s team at the AoC National Championships, four Hartpury players also picked up a gold and a bronze medal.

The girls’ team, which included Hartpury students Tara Rodenhurst and Courtney Boyes, successfully defended the title they won last year.

Alex Chalk and Jamie Thomas, meanwhile, picked up bronze medals as part of the boys’ team that narrowly lost out on second spot on countback.

“We’re pleased to have qualified for both the British Colleges and Schools Tour as well as the Intercollegiate Tour and will be focusing hard on putting in a good performance at both events next month,” King added.

“There have been a lot of good results lately and we’re hoping that we can carry these good performances into the finals.”
