Rachel is golden girl as Hartpury students shine in science showdown

Five Hartpury students have proved they are among the sharpest young Chemistry brains in the UK.

Chemistry A-level student, Rachel Johnson, from Gloucester, was Hartpury’s star performer in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s annual Chemistry Olympiad. She clinched a gold medal to put her among the top 7.6% of entrants in the UK.

The achievement of Nick Gallagher and international student Ly Xuan Bach from Vietnam, was perhaps even more remarkable. They achieved silver medals despite only being first year AS-level students.

Another international Chemistry A-level student, Ka Hin Ng, from Hong Kong, also achieved a silver medal, while Oliver Brown achieved a bronze medal.

he national competition provides an opportunity to stretch and challenge post-16 students studying chemistry and the Hartpury students had to complete a challenging written test of chemical knowledge. The questions are based on real world chemistry problems and often stimulate debate, raising awareness of what chemistry is all about.

At the end of the Olympiad, four students are selected to represent the UK in the International Chemistry Olympiad, offering an opportunity for students to travel to Azerbaijan – the 2015 host country - and meet fellow chemistry enthusiasts from all over the world.

Hartpury’s Chemistry A-level lecturer, Sion Wall, said: “This was the first time Hartpury had ever entered students into this prestigious competition so we really didn’t know what to expect.

“For five students to win medals for their academic performance up against the brightest young Chemistry talent in the country is an incredible achievement, especially when two of the students are only first years.”
