Hartpury pentathletes shine in sunny Spain with medal haul for GB

Hartpury’s pentathletes brought home a silver and bronze medal for Great Britain after a star showing at the Youth A European Cup in Spain last weekend.

An eight-strong GB team included five Hartpury students with the boys’ team featuring the Hartpury quartet of Bradley Sutton, Harry Sykes, Oliver Murray and Josh Miller, while Paris Allen was part of the girls’ squad.

And the two teams produced a strong display at the competition held in Sant Boi, Barcelona, as they both secured a podium finish in the team event, with the girls’ team securing a silver medal while the boys finished in third place.

The boys’ competition started positively in the fencing section with Sutton leading the way in sixth place, while Sykes and Murray were a place behind in joint seventh position and Miller ended the stage four places behind the duo in 11th.

Sutton continued his quick start with a third place finish in the swimming stage and the Hartpury foursome battled hard in the hot conditions in the final stage - the combined event - to secure a team bronze finish overall. Sutton led the way in ninth place with Sykes just one spot behind him, while Murray and Miller finished in 12th and 20th respectively.

In the girls’ half of the event, Allen began in fine style with a win in the swim and then followed that up with an impressive showing in the fencing stage to leave her in second place overall heading into the final section. In the same tough conditions that the boys faced and against a strong field of combined event athletes, Allen dug deep to finish in 13th position overall and help GB secure an impressive team silver medal.

Hartpury’s Head of Modern Pentathlon, Mat Dewey, said: “There were superb performances from all of our pentathletes and this has definitely provided them with another invaluable international competition experience. Their showing reflects the talent our Modern Pentathlon programme boasts and I’m positive that they will all continue to work hard and push on.”
