Hartpury RFC's McConnochie Rio-bound after Olympic call up

Hartpury RFC's McConnochie Rio-bound after Olympic call up

Former Hartpury RFC player, Ruaridh McConnochie, will find himself in line to be part of Team GB's opening rugby sevens fixture after being drafted into the 12-man squad in Rio.

The former RFC full-back, who was originally one of two travelling reserves, will link up with the rest of Simon Amor's squad after an injury to Alex Davies ruled him out of the competition.

McConnochie will come in and compete for a place in the team alongside another RFC alumni, Dan Norton, as the pair look ahead to the competition starting on August 8th.

Hartpury's Director of Rugby John Barnes, who coached Ruaridh during his time with the RFC, said: "Ruaridh's performances for us two seasons ago really pushed him into the limelight and he's gone from strength to strength on the sevens circuit. We wish him all the best and hope to see him get some game time in Rio for what will no doubt be an amazing experience for him."

Team GB Rugby Sevens Head Coach, Simon Amor, said: "Ruaridh will become part of the competing 12 and the group will continue to pull together as the focus remains on delivering for Team GB in Rio.

"It has been an amazing 12 months for Ruaridh who has played in all but one of the tournaments in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series this year.  He is here as a travelling reserve and can cover a number of positions. He is on excellent form and will take this in his stride and give it everything."
