Equine students learn dressage to music

Students from our Level 3 Horse Management courses spent an afternoon learning how to create a dressage to music display from Grand Prix level rider, Stef Eardley.

The lecture demonstration took place in one of our indoor arenas led by Stef (BHSII) and her horse, Ruxton Pinacolada.

Stef, who teaches at Hartpury and runs her own livery and training yard, competes to the highest level of Dressage (Grand Prix). She also trains herself with Carl Hester as well as some other top dressage trainers.

Tom Hallam, Head of Department for FE Equine, said “It is a fantastic opportunity for our equine students to take part in these lecture demonstrations to learn how to put dressage and music together successfully. It is great that our students are trained by top instructors such as Stef who are competing to the highest levels themselves. This really enables the students to gain the most from their lessons”.

Clare Farmer, Equine Lecturer and organiser of the lecture demonstration said, “Our students have been tasked to put together a dressage to music display and it was really useful for them to learn the tricks of the trade from Stef, such has how to match your own horse to different music, as well as an awareness of rhythm, striding and which music can be used for each of the horse’s gaits”.

Three of Hartpury’s equine students (James Knight, Megan Brown and Lucy Scudamore) also took part in the demonstration with Stef, on their own horses so that students could see the difference in striding and rhythm between horses, along with Lucy Neilson and Jade Joyce who helped out with the music.
