Inaugural university women's rugby festival a success

Inaugural university women's rugby festival a success

It’s the first of its kind to be held on Hartpury soil, and the first time both universities and clubs have linked up all season in the South West.

The day started with both Hartpury and local team Newent Town Ladies playing out a 5-30 game to the visitors. The score-line didn’t quite reflect how well Hartpury did against a team who were only new to rugby themselves in January, but were a fantastic advert for what hard work and commitment gets you.

Hartpury then rested while Newent faced Exeter University, again the club side coming out victorious. In the third game of the day the HEWR girls faced Exeter in what is becoming a monthly fixture. Each team have been along the same stages, from the touch tournament in October, to the fixture back in November, but this time Hartpury ran home 4 tries, two from winger Erin Williams, one from scrum-half Charlotte Drakeley, and one from hooker Rose Lubin. The final score was 20-10 to the hosts.

After a brief break, and a quick drink for the fans in the clubhouse, the fixtures were back on, with Hartpury narrowly losing again to Newent. The powerful Newent side then saw off Exeter, and in the last game of the festival Hartpury were unfortunate to succumb to a 0-5 loss against Exeter.

The success of the day was noted by all involved. From the Community Rugby Coach Tom Eddolls helping to officiate, to Hartpury’s very own paparazzi Fran Nutt- who spent most of the day taking photos of all the games! It was also a big day for former Hartpury Equine student Carla-Leigh Brown who was visiting the college for the first time since she left in the spring. Her 5 tries for Newent Town Ladies made her top scorer, and she was extremely happy with the festival by saying, “thank you to everyone who was involved in putting on a great day”.

Hartpury HEWR are always looking for new recruits, and are willing to take players of all abilities and experience. Both Head Coaches Ben Wroblewski and Craig Bonthrone are actively searching for new ways to better your rugby experience.
