Hartpury students get inside track on breeding the best on Northern Ireland trip

Hartpury students get inside track on breeding the best on Northern Ireland trip

Hartpury students headed to Northern Ireland recently to get the inside track on breeding the best horses in the world.

The 17 students attended the CAFRE Equine Breeding Conference at Greenmount Campus, County Antrim, gaining an insight into equine breeding from a host of top class speakers.

The speakers included Tullis Matson, who is the owner of Stallion AI Services, and Hayley Sullivan from the Irish National Stud. Sessions focused on the management of the breeding stallion, mare reproduction, biosecurity when breeding and foaling management.

The second year equine degree students, who were led by Hartpury Equine lecturers Anke Twigg-Flesner and Nicola Hewer, were given an opportunity to network and talk to the speakers as well as sharing their knowledge with students from Chichester College and final year CAFRE equine management students.

The conference, which is aimed at veterinary professionals, breeders, stable staff and students, ended with a discussion session.

Anke, Senior Lecturer in Equine Science at Hartpury, said: “All the students found the conference interesting and enjoyable. We’re investigating the possibility of extending it to a two or three-day trip next year so the students are able to experience more of what the Irish equine industry has to offer.”
