Hartpury’s outdoor adventure students were given the lowdown on the thrills and spills of being an international white water kayaker as former student Eddy Mead returned to the college.

The Cardiff-based white water kayaker, who balances his time between family life and work with his desire to challenge himself on the river, spoke to the aspiring students about his fitness training plans and nutrition, as well as his sponsorship deals with adventure brands, Escape Watersports and Palm.

Mead, 24, from Coleford in the Forest of Dean, began kayaking at the age of 10 and has represented Great Britain on numerous occasions as well as taking part in one of the sport’s toughest races, the Adidas Sickline. The BTEC Diploma Outdoor Adventure graduate now has his sights set on next year’s World Championships in the USA.

Outdoor Adventure lecturer, Emily Fussey, said: “The talk was incredibly inspiring. It’s so good to see ex-students come back to help and advise current students on the different paths they are able to take when they have completed their course.”
