Hartpury student taking leap across pond to lead young gymnasts

A Hartpury College student is jetting off to Florida this weekend to coach a gymnastics club at a major competition in the Sunny State.

Charlotte Punter, who is studying a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport Coaching, will be helping to coach ‘The Portishead Academy of Gymnastics’ and ‘Mullion Gymnastics Centre’ at the Magical Classic Gymnastics Competition in Orlando.

Charlotte, 17, said: “I’m very excited to be going. I have competed in Florida twice before, but it will be a new experience coaching and I am really looking forward to the challenge.”

Charlotte was speaking ahead of a visit by Hartpury Primary School to the college, whose Reception Year pupils currently come in once a week to be taught by the BTEC students. Years One, Two, Three and Four have received coaching in previous terms.

As part of their course, students design and run sessions for primary schools and then get the opportunity to go on a nine-week full-time placement at a school where they can further refine their skills. They receive feedback from both their lecturers and the teachers at the schools.

She added: “I love teaching the primary school children. These visits will help me when I am in America, as I will be coaching a lot of gymnasts who are eight or nine years old, and hopefully I can take what I have learned coaching here over to Florida.

“My lecturers at Hartpury are always willing to help, and will always give little tips which I can use for the next time I coach. They have been really supportive about my trip.”

Dan Robinson, Subject Leader for General Sport and Further Education Sports Coordinator at Hartpury College, said: “It is a fantastic opportunity for Charlotte, and I know that the other students are jealous that she gets to go to Florida for 12 days!

“She will have the chance to use everything she has learnt from her BTEC course, and I am absolutely positive that she will be a great credit to the gymnastic clubs and the college.”

There was more tournament success for our sports teams this week, with the golfers and netballers extending their excellent run of form. Although our footballers had mixed fortunes, the rugby teams were without a loss between them.

Mixed fortunes for our sports teams this week, but some cracking results for the netballers, golfers and women’s rugby players, who all clinched tournament success.
