Conference at Hartpury hopes to help employers become disability confident

Hartpury College continued its commitment to help break down barriers as part of a nationwide scheme aimed at supporting disability in the workplace by hosting the latest Disability Confident Conference.

Mark Harper, Member of Parliament for the Forest of Dean and Minister for Disabled People, welcomed people to the event, which included an appearance from Pamela Uddin, a former contestant on BBC series “The Apprentice” who is now a Brand Manager for Unilever.

Pamela, who suffers from dyslexia and also has a stammer, spoke to attendees about how employers can make simple adjustments to support people with disabilities and also how she has overcome barriers to achieve success.

The event was also attended by Hartpury’s Principal, Russell Marchant, who gave the audience an insight into the many ways Hartpury are working hard to support disability in the workplace.

As well as employing several disabled members of staff, the college has strong links with Riding for the Disabled, while Paralympian Mel Nichols is Hartpury’s first Sports Ambassador – using her expertise to help the college develop its elite athletes.

The Disability Confident campaign was launched in 2013 by the Prime Minister and is aimed at getting employers to become more confident about employing disabled people. More than 1000 employers, including Hartpury, have already joined the campaign.
