Hartpury’s newly-formed hockey teams tasted success in their first ever tournament yesterday, despite only being founded a few weeks ago.
Competing at the Rush Hockey Tournament, the two Hartpury sides saw off three established squads to finish in first and second place.
There was also individual recognition for four players - Sam Thomas was named man of the tournament and Ellie Brinley was awarded woman of the tournament. Rich Owen scooped up top goalscorer honours, while Kayleigh Clark picked up most improved performance.
The team is made up of college and university students and is coached and chaired by Sports Coaching degree student Ruth Canham. Fellow Sports Coaching degree students Alex Allman and Jasmine Gardiner assist with the running of the club as treasurer and secretary respectively.
Ruth said: “It’s great that we have been able to start a hockey team and it has received a lot of interest from students doing a range of courses.
“For our first tournament we have done extremely well and we are very pleased with the result. Hopefully we can carry this on to competitions in the future.”
Since its creation in September 2014, Hartpury Students’ Union has been working hard with students to increase activities available. All the clubs and societies are student led and there are three that are officially ratified, with many more clubs preparing for ratification.
