Hartpury students feel the force from RAF, and the wind, in gruelling fitness challenge

Hartpury students braved the wet and windy conditions recently as three officers from the Royal Air Force (RAF) visited the college to provide an intense physical fitness session.

The college’s Uniformed Public Services students were put through their paces in a variety of fitness challenges that saw them running, crawling and rolling through Hartpury’s muddy landscape while also facing off against each other in a range of team-building experiences.

And the visit from the military provided the perfect insight into life as a member of the RAF, with multiple Hartpury students already progressing through the application process.

Joe Beckett, a 17-year-old from Gloucester, said: “It was a really interesting session, especially because I am doing the airmen’s selection test next week for the RAF. Although the fitness session was challenging, I also found it motivational and it was an insight into how demanding the fitness has to be.

“The opportunity to speak to the staff of the regiment was excellent and it was interesting to find out a little more about the job that they do.”

Brendan Ward, Lecturer in Uniformed Public Services at Hartpury, said: “We have had a number of students successfully gain employment in the RAF in a variety of roles so it’s great to get their staff on site taking sessions for our current crop of students.

“It gives them a glimpse of a potential future career choice and the visit from the RAF reinforces what the students see when they go on trips to RAF Brize Norton. We also hold study skill sessions to help those who apply to prepare them for their interviews and tests.”
