Forest pupils supported into their swing by Hartpury students

Children with Special Educational Needs from throughout the Forest of Dean have been getting into their sporting swing with the support of students from Hartpury College.

Twenty-nine primary school aged pupils from Mitcheldean, Westbury-on-Severn and Ruardean primary schools pitched up at Dene Magna School in Mitcheldean for a Tri Golf event last week.

The event was planned and run by 23 Hartpury students in the second year of their BTEC Coaching diploma. All of the children who took part thoroughly enjoyed the day, getting the chance to try out chipping and putting.

Hartpury has a strong link with Dene Magna School established with the support of Steve Price, the School Games Organiser for the Forest of Dean, and has run a number of Special Education Needs (SEN) events for primary schools there.

Dan Robinson, General Sport and Further Education Sports Coordinator at Hartpury, said: “Our BTEC Coaching students attended a training session to help them prepare and then ran the whole event themselves. They organised the pupils at the different stations, supporting them and giving them the confidence to try out the activities.

“For many of the children, it was the first time they have ever had a go at a sport like golf and they really enjoyed themselves.

“The golf development officer who helped train our students to run the event, Alan Beard, said that it was one of the best Tri Golf sessions he has ever seen delivered.

"At Hartpury, we're really proud of the partnership work we do with schools and communities throughout Gloucestershire and beyond.

“These kind of events give our students confidence in working with young people with SEN and they were really chuffed to have been recognised for doing such a good job. They found it hugely rewarding seeing the enjoyment the children got out of the day.”

Tri-Golf is a ‘mini’ version of golf for primary schools, which involves the use of adapted equipment and a variety of games designed to provide an enjoyable introduction to the sport.
