Hartpury looking strong ahead of regional title defence

By Emerald Cammegh

Hartpury’s netballers are gearing up to provide a staunch defence of their British Colleges Sport Regional Championship title after a resounding victory over Hereford Sixth Form College.

After suffering their first loss of the season the previous week, the first team bounced back perfectly to secure a 41 goal win against their opponents.

The girls were dominant throughout with the final scoreline of 57-16 doing justice to the quality of their performance.

Paige Reed, making her return from injury, led by example with an outstanding shooting display to fire the team to victory. She boasted a 94% shooting accuracy rate, missing just one goal in the first 30 minutes.

Captain Izzy Dunsford and first year student Emma Johnson provided a potent combination with fast and fluid moves throughout, leaving Hereford’s defence standing still.

Jane Newton and Simone Ulyate were a defensive force with their frequent interceptions allowing the rest of the team to build an insurmountable lead.

Hartpury Netball Manager, Sarah Pretty, said: “I’m proud of the performance. After last week’s defeat, the whole team responded and performed brilliantly to return to winning ways.

“Being on the road to the Regional Schools challenge and looking to defend a title brings with it a lot of responsibility and pressure and the girls are showing that they are determined to get the job done.”

On the same day, the second team sealed their third win in a row, coming out 35-27 winners against Hereford Sixth Form College second team.

A slow start to the game saw Hartpury level at 8-8 in the first quarter, but Heather Longbotham’s  100% shooting conversion rate ensured Hartpury came out on top in a tightly contested affair.

Pretty said: “The league is far from over and we’re doing everything we can to remain in contention. If we maintain our current form, we are in with a great shout of challenging for first place.”
