Hartpury Sport round-up from 20.01.16

Hartpury’s university rugby first XV carried their winning form from last year into 2016 after securing a win over Cardiff Met firsts.

A 34-22 win over their Welsh opponents saw the squad leapfrog Exeter firsts into top place in the BUCS Premier South A League, with the two sides coming up against each other in two weeks’ time.

In other rugby results, the women’s BUCS first team produced a try-frenzy display in a 117-14 win against Marjons firsts while the women’s AASE squad came away victorious in their friendly sevens fixture with Bicton College.

The BUCS seconds and thirds both fell to defeat with the former losing 26-19 to Exeter second XV in the BUCS Premier South B League, while the latter lost out to Southampton firsts in a 39-17 scoreline in the BUCS Western 1A League. The Under-18s fourth team produced a strong defensive display in the A0C League as they beat Worcester Sixth Form firsts 58-0.

Hartpury’s golfers were also in action in round three of the Intercollegiate Tour with Alex Chalk firing a four under par score of 66 to seal a tied for second place finish. The Hartpury A team finished in second and third place in the gross and nett division respectively while the B team managed a fifth and tied for fourth position finish.

The Under-19s football first team maintained their 100% record in the ECFA Premier League with a 2-1 win against Gower Swansea firsts, while the BUCS first team lost to University of South Wales first team by the same scoreline in the BUCS Premier South League. The Under-19s seconds shared the spoils with North Shropshire College in the ECFA Premier Cat 2A League in a 2-2 result and the Under-19s third XI produced a 3-0 win over Cirencester seconds in the AoC West Midlands Cat 2C league, while the Under-19 girl’s firsts drew 0-0 with Hereford Sixth Form in the AoC West Midlands Cat 3B League.

The netballers were in friendly action as the junior first team lost by 12 points in a 42-30 affair with the Junior Dragons.

There were some mixed fortunes this week, with a shock result for Hartpury’s top rugby players, as well as some commendable performances including a massive victory for the women’s rugby stars and good efforts from two non-academy sporting teams on their first major outing of the season.

Hartpury’s junior football manager Paul Tassell was named 2016’s Sports Champion at the Believe in Gloucester Awards last night after more than a decade of continued success at the college.

Hartpury student Sandy Fotheringham will be hoping to put in a statuesque performance for his dad at next year’s Wild Water Canoe World Championships after the proud father built a 15-foot hay bale replica of him so he can continue making waves in his sport!
