Olympic dream very much a possibility for Hartpury quartet with GB sevens selection

Olympic dream very much a possibility for Hartpury quartet with GB sevens selection

As the countdown to Rio begins, four players with Hartpury College ties have been selected for the two Great Britain Women’s rugby sevens squads to contest the opening round of the Rugby Europe Grand Prix Sevens Series this weekend.

Former students Abbie Brown and Natasha Hunt have been called up to the GB Lions squad alongside Danielle Waterman, who formerly headed up the women’s rugby programme at Hartpury, while Megan Jones has also been selected to represent the GB Royals squad.

Players from England, Scotland and Wales have come together for the last official competition ahead of this summer’s Olympic Games and the quartet will be hoping to stake a claim for a place in the Olympic squad with a set of impressive performances in the first leg of the circuit, held in Kazan, Russia.

Brown has appeared for England on the World Series circuit this year, scoring on her debut in a 38-5 win over Japan in the Sao Paolo leg of the competition, while Jones became the youngest player to feature at senior level for the England Women’s sevens squad when she took part in the FIRA European Sevens Grand Prix two years ago. Hunt won the Women’s World Cup with England in 2014 and has also appeared for the sevens squad in this year’s World Series circuit.

Tom Radcliffe, Hartpury’s Director of Elite Sport, said: “It’s fantastic to see Abbie, Megan, Natasha and Danielle in with a chance of making it to the Olympics. It is the pinnacle of sport and hopefully they can boost their claims for selection with a strong performance this weekend. Everyone here at Hartpury wishes them the very best of luck!”
