Student sports roundup from 04.03.15

Hartpury’s Under-19s football first team continued their assault on all competitions with a 3-0 win on a day which also saw victories for both the college and university 1st XV rugby sides.

Paul Tassell’s side cantered to victory over second-from-bottom Brooke House College in difficult conditions at home to remain in control at the top of the ECFA Premier League. You can read the full match report here.

Both first XV rugby teams, meanwhile, rounded off a good day for Hartpury’s top tier sides – the BUCS side continued their march towards a second consecutive national final with a 38-14 victory over Durham while our college side racked up yet another win on the bounce to beat Coley Y Cymoedd in the AoC Premier League. You can read the full BUCS match report here.

While Hartpury’s rugby and football teams were dominating on the pitch, our golfers wrapped up the most recent round of the Intercollegiate Tour, taking the top two spots in both the gross and nett divisions. Jamie Thomas, Alex Chalk and Rowan Warren also occupied the top three spots in the day’s individual results.

With the BUCS football first team not in action until next week, the second team stole the limelight this week by guaranteeing themselves top spot in the BUCS Western 1A division with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over visitors, Bournemouth University first team. The result gives them eight wins from 10 games this season and gives them the top spot by a nine-point margin.

While there were losses for the BUCS thirds football team – 2-1 in the Western Conference Cup Semi Final – and the BUCS seconds rugby side, who went down 22-21 in the BUCS Premier South B, there were wins for the BUCS thirds in the rugby and Under-19s thirds football side, who won 60-36 against Bournemouth and 2-0 against Hereford XI Form respectively.

The Under-19s fourth team rounded off an excellent day of results for the college with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Codshall Community School.

Next week sees a feast of semi-finals with the BUCS rugby and football first teams in action in their respective national championships, while the Under-18s rugby side will look to book a place in their sixth consecutive AASE Championship final.
