Hartpury trio on track with truck technology to take top engineering prize

A team of Hartpury Agriculture students impressed the judges to see off rival colleges from throughout the UK in the Institution of Agricultural Engineers’ Young Engineers Competition 2016.

Harry Bridle, 17, George Leighton, 16, and Stuart Truman, 16, who are all studying the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Land-based Technology at Hartpury College, constructed a remote-controlled vehicle that took top honours in class two of the national competition.

The teams had to complete a problem solving task by creating a remote or radio controlled vehicle - having been given a set of standard wheels, a battery and maximum dimensions - which would produce the best performance on a standard inclined test track.

The winning Hartpury students each won a Bosch electric drill (sponsored by Bosch) and £100 as a team prize, which will be spent on equipment or a specialist tool for Hartpury’s land Based workshop.

Hartpury Agriculture tutor, Ian Coleman, said: “Our students were up against some of the best young engineers in the country and have come out on top, which is a fantastic achievement.

“Here at Hartpury, we pride ourselves on producing the agricultural engineers of the future who are at the forefront of innovation in the industry. It’s great to see them take what they have learned on their course and apply it to a practical challenge and excel in a national competition.”

The prestigious Young Engineers competition was sponsored by the Douglas Bamford Trust, Autoglide Equipment and Bosch Rexroth and was hosted by Knight Farm Machinery.
