Students navigate the great outdoors to benefit their teaching skills inside the classroom

Hartpury students channelled their inner ‘Bear Grylls’ after navigating a four-day adventure with the help of a former college lecturer.

A selection of Physical Education and School Sport (PESS) degree students spent time with former Hartpury lecturer Tim Treloar in the Brecon Beacons, gaining an insight into outdoor adventure activities that will stand them in good stead for their future careers.

The outdoor adventure saw students take part in a variety of events, from canoeing and other water-based activities to learning how to navigate in a forest.

And they were then put to the test when they embarked on an overnight expedition in Brecon, with the trip playing a key role in helping students secure their National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) bronze level.

The NNAS is a personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages to learn navigation skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside, while also being able to lead low level navigation with school pupils.

Gemma Sharples, Lecturer in PESS at Hartpury, said: “The aim of the trip was to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence in our students in planning and delivering outdoor adventure sessions as part of the national curriculum.

“This trip will hopefully see them put what they learned into practice and use it when they are teaching pupils at their placement schools. Following this trip, students are now ready to finish their NNAS bronze award and Tim will be returning to us in May to complete their training and qualification.”
